New Mayor, who dis?! This week Marc Nelson was sworn in as the new Mayor of the City of Poughkeepsie. Nelson will fill the seat of former Mayor Rob Rolison for the remainder of 2023 since Rolison was elected to the New York State Senate. Nelson has served as City Administrator under the Rolison administration since 2018. Featured here are photos of Mayor Nelson’s swearing in ceremony at The Academy, which was presided over by DC Supreme Court Judge Edward McLoughlin. At the event Mayor Nelson thanked the many partners of the City of Poughkeepsie and said he “looks forward to building on the strong progress the city has made.” Link in bio for the full press release. Found & Fixed HV is a new business focusing on upc

Found & Fixed HV is a new business focusing on upcycling and restoring old furniture with a new, modern aesthetic. With a sustainability ethos, they are taking still usable but slightly tired pieces and giving them new life. Setup as a cooperative, owners Justine and Gabe shared why they chose PK. Justine, a PK resident, said that the community has been extremely supportive in sharing the business by word of mouth. “The community is even more tight-knit than I imagined,” said Gabe, “I’ve really been inspired by all the new ideas and energy across the city.”

Gabe got interested in carpentry and furniture restoration 8 years ago, but was limited by space and tools. Justine started as a hobbyist, but the hobby became a business when she restored a dresser found on the Southside and made a profit after only 4 hours of work. From there on they started getting more commissioned pieces as word spread. F+F likes it best when clients bring in a piece they’ve already found and want restored, but you can also follow them @foundandfixed_hv to see other non-commissioned pieces for sale. If you do bring in a piece, expect a collaborative process to customize your new favorite showpiece. “So now we are at a point of expansion,” said Justine, “we are actively looking to partner with shops around town to display finished pieces.”

If you haven't yet made it down to The Dutch Crown, you're missing out! PK natives Eli and Chris opened the spot in September of this year and it's serving all the right neighborhood pizzaria vibes. Grab a seat at the bar or host your holiday party in the back room, you wont be disappointed by the crispy sourdough pizza or the friendly staff. When asked why they chose PK, the owners responded without hesitation, "Poughkeepsie is on it's way up!". With establishments like this, we certainly are. Here we have another fascinating example of long-l

Here we have another fascinating example of long-lost Poughkeepsie. These two buildings, having addresses of 12-18 Academy Street, were built in the early 19th century. This photo was taken sometime between 1908 (when the Lady Washington Hose Co. building on the far left was built) and 1913 (by which time the Luckey Platt department store had razed these buildings and erected a new three story building to house their furniture department.) The photo comes from @dchsny and the caption reads, “Perhaps the most famous local retail store across the 19th and 20th centuries was Luckey Platt, at Main Street near Academy Street. This photo shows some service buildings on Academy.” The second image is the 1895 Sanborn map, which shows these buildings before they were replaced.

Take a peek at Civil War-era Main Street Poughkeep

Take a peek at Civil War-era Main Street Poughkeepsie. These photos were all taken in the early 1860s of the Main and Garden Street area. The first two photos show the original building on the north west corner of Main and Garden Streets, where 289 Main is today (@itsvidl @massdesigngroup @laughinggutkombucha ). All manner of shops and services could be found on Main Street, including sewing rooms, dentists, jewlers, boot and shoe makers, insurance brokers, stove makers, and more on what appear to be cobblestone streets (predating the more uniform and handsome Belgian Blocks, whose widespread use didn’t start until around the 1870s). Just love me some old time Poughkeepsie 🥰
